Found at the Garden
"As explorers in this world, we discover images and impressions, which often awaken something within us. In this exhibition, we are asking: What is our power and responsibility in relationship to the images we find? In this garden, there are an infinitude of creations waiting for you to discover them. Among these are artworks we have made from text and images found in books, magazines, scraps of this and that, all rescued from the landfill. We intervened on these materials through collage, photomontage, and mixed media. We were connected by a shared mentor for an intensive week of making in February 2021. We each made more than 60 artworks, working “side by side” over video chat. In doing so, we found the permission to value our own intuitive response to the found images and text rather than simply accepting the agenda of their creators. We found delight in the tension between control and chaos, solitude and togetherness. Therefore we welcome you to respond creatively to the things you find in this garden. We have prepared a few exercises to get you started. We hope you will delight in intervening on the twigs and the chairs, on the dirt and the sky. We look forward to seeing your artworks here and in our digital gallery. What will you find in the garden?"
